OMAHA, Neb. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University hockey team did not step out on the right foot for the first game in 2005. The â€Â˜Cats tied the game with Matt Ciancioâ€Â™s goal in the second period againstNebraska-Omaha, but that was to be it for the â€Â˜Cats on the night as theydropped the 3-1 game to the Mavericks.  NMU falls to 9-6-4 overall on theseason and 7-4-2 in CCHA play.  The Mavericks are now 9-9-1 and 7-7-1respectively.


UNO struck first with a goal at 6:21 of the first period byBrandon Scero.  Ciancio tied the game at one-all with his second goal of theseason at 11:00 of the second period.  Rob Lehtinen and Zach Tarkir assisted onthe goal.  The Mavericks added two more goals to put the game away.  Joe Grimaldiscored the game-winner at 18:04 of the second period on the power play.  TheMavericks added an insurance goal at 4:05 of the third period by Scero, for hissecond of the game, for the final margin.


Bill Zaniboni stopped 28 shots for the â€Â˜Cats on the night. Chris Holt for UNO had 26 saves for the game.  NMU had four power playopportunities on the night and could not put the puck in the net with the extraattacker.  UNO had three power play chances.  The home team had a 31-27advantage on shots.


The two squads will square off for the second game of theweekend set tomorrow night in Omaha (Jan. 8).
