Allison Carroll Leads 'Cats To First GLIAC Win


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ Allison Carroll poured in acareer-high 19 points to lead the Northern Michigan University womenâ€Â™sbasketball team to their first GLIAC win of the season on Monday night, overthe visiting The University of Findlay Oilers 77-65, at the Berry Events Center. Ã‚ ÃƒÃ‚‚  NMU is now 8-3 overall on the season and 1-2 in the GLIAC.  UF falls to6-7 and 1-3 in the conference.

 

The â€Â˜Cats never trailed in the game as the squad jumped outto a quick 14-point lead about seven minutes into the game.  Carroll had 13 ofher team-high points in the first 20 minutes of play.  Both teams shot in the40 percent range in the first half from the floor.  The â€Â˜Cats were just a bitbetter at 47.1 percent (16-34) while the Oilers were shooting at a 41.7 percentclip (10-24).

 

The second half was all NMU, but the Oilers cut the lead toone point three times within the first three minutes of the half.  NMU answeredwith an 11-point run when Danicia Braun made two free throws at the 11:12 markto make the score 57-43.  UF had the â€Â˜Cats lead down to seven points with 32ticks of the clock left in the game (72-65).  Tera Opperman and Michelle Moardmade key free throws and baskets down the stretch for the win.

 

Carroll also had six rebounds and two steals in the win. Three other â€Â˜Cats were in the double-digit scoring column as Grubaugh had 17points, Opperman 12 and Moard 10.  Grubaugh added four rebounds, seven assistsand two steals.  Opperman had five steals as Bruan added seven.  Michelle Vorstfor UF had 19 points.  Julie Kafun had a game-high 14 rebounds. 

 

For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 28-55 from the floor (50.9percent) and 3-12 from the three-point line (25 percent).  From the free throwline NMU was 18-23 for 78.3 percent.  UF did have 10 more rebounds than NMU at40-30.  The Oilers had 19 offensive boards to 10 for the â€Â˜Cats.

 

NMU will hit the road later in the week as they will take onHillsdale on Thursday night (Jan. 6) and Wayne State on Saturday (Jan. 8).
