'Cats Can Not Hold The Lead

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University hockey team started the 2004-05 season off tonight with an exhibition gameagainst the USNTDP U-18 team.  The â€Â˜Cats had a 3-0 lead a little over fourminutes into the third period.  But the visitors struck for three un-answeredgoals in the third period to tie the game at three-all after 60 minutes ofplay.  The game went into OT and neither team could score, so the game ended ina tie.  The last time an NMU team did not win an exhibition game was during the1985-86 campaign when Team Canada defeated the â€Â˜Cats 6-0 and 7-5.

 

Dusty Collins got the â€Â˜Cats on the board first with a goalat 14:01 of the first period as Matt Ciancio assisted.  John Miller scored apower-play goal to make it 2-0 at 19:08 of the opening period with as JamieMilam and Patrick Murphy assisted on the goal.  Ciancio then made it 3-0 with agoal at 4:38 of the third period as Collins and Waugh assisted.

 

The USNTDP U-18 team scored two short-handed goals at 9:41and 11:48 of the third period to make the game 3-2.  Peter Mueller tied thegame with a power-play goal at 14:16 of the final period.

 

A total of 29 penalties were called for the game.  NMU had13 for 26 minutes, while the USNTDP U-18 team had 16 for 32 minutes.  The â€Â˜Catswere 1-11 on the power play while the visitors were 1-9 with the extraattacker. 

 

Bill Zaniboni seeing his first action in a Wildcat uniformhad 21 saves on the night.  Billy Blase for the USNTDP U-18 team had 18 saveson the night.  The shots were in favor of the visitors with 24 to 21 for thehome team.

 

The â€Â˜Cats will play their second exhibition game tomorrownight against York University at 7:35 p.m. in the Berry Events Center.
