'Cats Played Hard, But Come Up Short

 

ERIE, Pa. â€Â“ For the second yearin a row the Northern Michigan University football team had to travel to Erie, Pa.the second weekend of the season to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers.  The â€Â˜Catsplayed hard the entire game, but came up short as the Lakers won on their homefield by a 45-27 count.  NMU is now 0-2 overall and in the GLIAC on the seasonwhile MC is 1-1 overall and in the conference. 

 

The â€Â˜Cats took the opening kickoff of the game and  marchedto the Mercyhurst 20-yard line as Kyle Marotz kicked a 37-yard field goal togive the â€Â˜Cats the early 3-0 lead at 10:09 of the first quarter.  The Lakersadded a TD and a field goal in the second quarter to take the 10-3 lead. 

 

Marotz kicked his second field goal of the game, a 20-yardkick, at 1:47 of the second quarter to narrow the gap to 10-6.  With less than30 seconds left before the half, the Lakers struck for a TD to take the lead at17-6 after the first 30 minutes of play.

 

The third quarter saw the Lakers score 14 points to expandthe lead to 31-6.  MC scored on a one-yard run at 10:01 and then on a 52-yardinterception return at 6:34.

 

Dion Brown scored six for the â€Â˜Cats when he ran theproceeding kickoff back 98 yards for a TD.  Marotzâ€Â™s kick was good and theâ€Â˜Cats were now down 31-13 with 6:18 left in the third quarter.

 

Almost three minutes into the fourth quarter Abram McCoyfound the end zone from six yards out and the two point conversion was good asthe Lakers lead was down to 10 at 31-21.  It was the then the Lakers turn toreturn a kickoff for a touchdown.  The kickoff after McCoyâ€Â™s score was anon-side kick, but the Lakers ran it back 42 yards for six points.  With thegood extra point the â€Â˜Cats now faced a 38-21 deficit at 12:15 of the fourth quarter.

 

The Lakers capped off their scoring on the day when JeffNowling had a 20-yard run with 10:27 left in the game.  With the score 45-21 infavor of the home team, Nick Mauthe caught a eight-yard pass from Mike Quirozfor the final margin at 3:37 of the fourth quarter.

 

As a team the â€Â˜Cats managed 17 first downs on the day to theLakers 14.  On 83 plays for the game the â€Â˜Cats had 274 yards of total offense. Quiroz in his first career start had 239 yards passing on 25-51-2 with one TD. McCoy led the â€Â˜Cats on the ground with 56 yards on 22 carries.  VincentMayfield had 14 catches for 153 yards on the day.

 

NMUâ€Â™s home opener is next Saturday night, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m. against The University of Findlay.
