MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan Universityhockey team ended the 2003-04 academic year with an overall grade point averageof 2.96.ÃƒƒÃ‚‚Ãƒ‚Ã‚ Nine members of the squad that finished the 2003-04 season on the icewith a 21-16-4 overall record carry a 3.0 GPA or higher.ÃƒƒÃ‚‚Ãƒ‚Ã‚ "We wereextremely happy of our student-athletes progress on and off the ice," DaveShyiak, the associate head coach of the NMU hockey team, said.ÃƒƒÃ‚‚Ãƒ‚Ã‚ "We arehappy that the student-athletes can handle the workload on and off theice."ÃƒƒÃ‚‚Ãƒ‚Ã‚
The top six 'Cats in the classroom were Matt Maunuwith a 3.73 GPA, Zach Tarkir and Dusty Collins both brought home a 3.61 GPA intheir first year, Kevin Gardner was next on the list with a 3.56 GPA, anotherfreshman Darin Olver scored a 3.52 GPA and Alan Swanson had a 3.46 GPA.
"It is encouraging to see that they have managedtheir time well to achieve academic excellence," Shyiak added.
