MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ Doug Sams theHead Football Coach at Northern Michigan University has announced that JovanDewitt has been hired as an assistant football coach for the Wildcats.  He willbe in charge of the linebackers, coordinate the front seven and special teams. Dewitt will also assist with academics and recruit the state of Wisconsin. 


â€ÂœWe are excited to welcome Jovan to the Wildcat family.  Hebrings a lot of positives and strengths to our program.  We believe that hishire will assist us in attaining the goals of our program continuing in ourmove in building a very competitive program,â€Â Sams said.


â€ÂœIâ€Â™m excited about the opportunity to give back to a placethat has given so much to me,â€Â Dewitt said.  He was a four-time letterwinnerfor the â€Â˜Cats from 1993-96.  Dewitt was a two-time All-MIFC selection as he wasthe MIFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1996.  After the 1996 season he playedin the NCAA II Shrine Bowl. For the 1995 season, Dewitt was named to the Dr.C.M. Frank All-America Team.


Dewitt was invited to the New Orleans Saints camp in thesummer of 1997.  He went on to play three years in the Arena Football League withthe Iowa Barnstormers (1997), the Orlando Predators (1998) and the Fargo Freeze(1999) in the AFL II.


Dewitt began his coaching career at NMU as a studentassistant defensive line coach for the 1997 season.  He was a two-year graduateassistant for the Wildcats from 2000-01 as he coached the running backs and wasthe academic coordinator.  For the 2002 season he was the offensive coordinatorat Ft. Scott Community College in Kansas.  Last season (2003), Dewitt was theoffensive coordinator, the special teams and academic coordinator at FairmontState College in West Virginia.

Dewitt graduated from NMU in 1999 with a bachelorâ€Â™s degreein physics and mathematics.  He is currently working on a masterâ€Â™s degree inpublic administration at NMU.  Dewitt and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter,Maya.
