HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s cross country ski team competed at the NCAA Central RegionalChampionships over the weekend at Michigan Tech.  On Saturday the â€Â˜Cats weresecond in the 10K freestyle race with 79 points as Alaska Fairbanks won theevent with 84 points.  Sunday in the 20K classic race NMU was second again with82 points as the Nanooks took the team title by one point over the â€Â˜Cats with83 points.  Only the top three skiers scored the team points in each event.


Bryan Cook captured the freestyle race on Saturday with atime of 24:58.5.  The Nanooks had the next three scoring places in the event. August Kaeding was the next â€Â˜Cat to finish as he was seventh in the event witha time of 26:24.1.  About nine seconds behind Kaeding was Mike New in eighthplace (26:33.4).


Sunday was the classical race as the â€Â˜Cats had two of thetop three finishers.  Cook was second with a time of 59:02.4 as teammateAdriaan Ostrander was third in the event with a clocking of 59:23.1.  RobertBaldwin was the third â€Â˜Cat to score team points as he was sixth in the event(1:00:46.2).


The team will compete next at the NCAA Skiing Championships,March 10-13, which are being held at the Auburn Ski Club in Truckee, Calif.
