ALLENDALE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team needed a win going into the GLIAC Tournamentand they got that on Saturday afternoon at Grand Valley State University.  NMUdefeated the Lakers 65-62 after being tied at the half.  The â€Â˜Cats conclude theregular season with a 16-11 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.  GVSUends the season at 14-13 and 6-12.


The first half the â€Â˜Cats had a lead with six points at onetime, but the Lakers cut into the lead towards the end of the half.  With theâ€Â˜Cats up by six points with 3:31 left the Lakers drained a three-pointer withwas followed up by a dunk to cut the score to 28-27.  After a Billy Hillturnover the Lakers took the lead at 29-28 with a little over a minute left inthe half.  Antwuan Holt then converted two lay-ups in the final minute of thehalf, as the Lakers hit a three-pointer, to make the score 32-all after 20minutes of play. 


NMU was shooting at a 53.8 percent clip (14-26) in the firsthalf while the Lakers were at 37.0 percent (10-27).  The difference was theLakers made six three-pointers in the first half to just one for the â€Â˜Cats.


The â€Â˜Cats held their biggest lead of the second half ofseven points at the 10:35 mark as the score was 49-42.  The Lakers would runoff the next eight points in a row to take the 50-49 lead with six minutes leftin the game.  The â€Â˜Cats took the lead back again for good at 57-56 when MarcoVolcy hit a jumper with three minutes left in the game.  David Noel and Steve Wattsmade two free throws each to put the game away with less than 20 ticks left onthe clock.


Volcy led the â€Â˜Cats on the afternoon with 15 points andeight rebounds.  Hill and Watts both ended the game with 13 points.  NMU didcommit 21 turnovers on the afternoon.  As a team the â€Â˜Cats shot 50 percent fromthe floor (25-50), 31.3 percent from the three-point line (5-16) and 71.4percent from the free throw line (10-14).  NMU was out-rebounded for the gameas the Lakers had 40 rebounds to 32 for the â€Â˜Cats.  


NMU will face Michigan Tech in Houghton on Tuesday night(March 2) in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament.
