
ST. CLOUD, Minn. â€Â“The NMU womenâ€Â™s cross country ski team won both races at the NCAA Qualifier #4over the weekend at Greystone Trail in St. Cloud, Minn. On the first day ofcompetition which was Saturday, Feb. 14 the â€Â˜Cats won the womenâ€Â™s 5K freestyleevent by taking the top four spots. NMU tallied 69 points as UW-Green Bay wassecond with 58 points. On Sunday the â€Â˜Cats made it a clean sweep by taking thewomenâ€Â™s classic race as NMU had the top three finishers. As a team NMU scored69 points as Gustavus was second with 54 points.
Caitlin Compton won the freestyleevent with a time of 14:30.0 a little over 27 seconds better than teammateJennifer Wygant (14:57.9). Katherine Huemmer was third at 15:05.2 and infourth was fellow â€Â˜Cat Victoria Koskenoja (15:23.4). Aniya Deitz rounded outthe scoring for NMU by placing sixth in the event (15:29.3).
Compton made it two-for-two as shetook the womenâ€Â™s classic race on Sunday (Feb. 15). She covered the course in atime of 44:43.6. The next two spots also belonged to the â€Â˜Cats as Koskenojawas second (45:49.2) and Wygant was third (46:12.4). Deitz and Huemmer werefifth and sixth respectively in the event with times of 46:49.6 and 46:49.6.
The team will compete at the NCAAGreat Lakes Regional which will be held at Michigan Tech the weekend of Feb.28-29.
