'Cats Down Bulldogs

Marquette, Mich. â€Â“ Leading by sixpoints at the half (37-31) the Northern Michigan University womenâ€Â™s basketballteam defeated Ferris State University in the annual â€ÂœPack The Placeâ€Â game heldat the Berry Events Center on Sunday afternoon.  The final score of the contestwas 78-71.  With the win the â€Â˜Cats now stand at 8-4 in the GLIAC and 16-4overall.  The Bulldogs are now 10-2 in the GLIAC and 15-6 overall.  NMU has nowwon two games in a row and are 4-2 in the past six games.

 

The Bulldogs held the lead the majority of the first half,but would give up their lead at 2:54 before halftime on a lay-up from Andrea Brooketo give the â€Â˜Cats a 28-26 advantage.  The Bulldogs would get the lead backbefore Tera Opperman canned two free throws with 1:24 left in the half as the â€Â˜Catstook the lead at 33-31.  Neither team was shooting the lights out as both leftthe floor shooting under 40 percent at the half.  Ferris was 33.3 percent fromthe floor (12-36) and NMU shot 31.3 percent (10-32).

Northern Michigan came out in the first five minutes of thesecond half with a 10-to-4 run to move the score to 47-35.  Lay-ups fromTiffany Grubaugh and Brooke sparked the run.

 

A three-pointer from FSUâ€Â™s Kristen Reinhart at 6:43 cut thelead down to four points, but that wasnâ€Â™t enough, as Holly Cole would answerthe three-pointer back with a jumper to make the score 57-51.  Free throwshooting from NMUâ€Â™s Emily Samuelson in the final five minutes capped off the score,as she was 10-11 from the line during the stretch.

 

Samuelson led the way for the â€Â˜Cats with 27 points, 13 ofwhich came off of free throws. Grubaugh added 21 markers in the win.  EmilyBelland tore up the boards with 12 rebounds, eight of them being defensivegrabs. 

 

NMU shot 35 percent for the game (21-60) from the floor,21.4 percent behind the three point arc (3-14) and 78.6 percent from the freethrow line (33-42). Ã‚  Ferris State was 33.8 percent (24-71) for the game fromthe floor, 36.4 percent (8-22) from behind the three-point line and 65.2percent from the charity stripe (15-23). NMU held the 50 to 46 reboundingadvantage.   

 

NMU will host Northwood for their next contest on Saturday,February 14 at 1:00 p.m.
