'Cats Hold Lakers Scoreless For Final Nine Minutes Of Game


Wildcats come up with the Win

 

Marquette, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team was just no match for Grand Valley State Universityas they came out strong in the final minutes of the game on Thursday night to takethe 48-45 GLIAC contest.  The Lakers slowed the pace of the game by taking someair out of the ball. Ã‚  Grand Valley now is 11-9 overall and 3-8 in the GLIAC. NMU now stands 12-8 overall and 6-5 in conference play. 

NMU would take their first lead of the night about fourminutes into the game at 8-5 with a three-pointer from Ricky Volcy.  GVSU wouldfight right back to tie the score at eight-all with two made free throws fromEric Chess.  From the start of the first half the score would go back and forthas there were a total of six lead changes. The Wildcats were barely out shot inthe first half by the Lakers as they left the floor with the visitors leading31-29.

Grand Valley was at 48.1 percent from the floor at the halfand Northern Michigan was just behind with 44 percent.

GVSU held the lead until 3:40 left in regulation when NMUâ€Â™sR. Volcy swooshed two from behind the charity line to give the â€Â˜Cats the leadat 46-45.  A lay-up from Billy Hill at 2:46 would secure the win for theâ€Â˜Cats.  NMUâ€Â™s defense played a big role in the win, as the team held GVSU to anamazing 28.6 percent from the floor for the second half, giving them 39.6 percent(19-48) for the contest.  The score for the second half was 19-14 in favor ofthe home team.  The Lakers were held scoreless the final nine plus minutes ofthe game. Ã‚  With a slowed down game the â€Â˜Cats managed to pull down 28 reboundsfor the game to the Lakers 23. 

NMU shot 50 percent from the floor (8-16) for the second 20minutes of play and for the game the â€Â˜Cats were 19-41 for 46.3 percent.  NMUwas 40 percent from the free throw line (4-10) and 31.6 percent from the three-pointarch (6-19). R. Volcy and Hill led the Green and Gold for the night eachscoring 13 points, being the only two for the â€Â˜Cats to score in double-digits. R. Volcy was also strong under the basket for the night, pulling down agame-high nine boards.  He just missed having his second double-double in arow.  Steve Watts also did his share grabbing seven rebounds. 

Northern Michigan University will play their next game at homeagainst Ferris State University, which will be Pack The Place on Sunday (Feb. 8)at 3:00 p.m.
