HUNTSVILLE, Ala.â€Â“ The Wildcat hockey team tied the University of Alabama-Huntsville onSaturday afternoon 3-3. The â€Â˜Cats were5-0 all-time against College Hockey America,which UAH is a member, entering the game. With the tie the â€Â˜Cats are now 13-11-2for the season. UAH is 9-9-2.
Dirk Southern scored the first goalof the game, unassisted, to give the â€Â˜Cats the 1-0 lead at 18:31 of the first period. For Southern it was his ninth goal of the season. The Chargers scored twice in the middle frameto take the lead 2-1. UAHâ€Â™s goals cameat 4:30 and 10:49 of the period.
Matt Hunter scored his first goalof the season at 6:21 of the thirdperiod to tie the game at two-all. Rob Lehtinenand Bobby Selden assisted on the goal. Alan Swanson gave the â€Â˜Cats the lead at 3-2 at 11:06 of the final period for his fifth goal of theseason. Line mates Kevin Gardner andAlex Sawruk assisted on Swansonâ€Â™s goal.
The Chargers tied the game at threewith a goal at 16:23 of the thirdperiod by Craig Bushey. In the overtimeperiod UAH had six shots to the â€Â˜Cats three.
Craig Kowalski had 31 saves for theâ€Â˜Cats on the afternoon. Adam MacLean forthe Chargers had 30 saves. UAH scoredthe only power-play goal on the afternoon and were 1-of-4 on the power playwhile NMU was 0-of-3. The shots werealmost even as UAH had one more than NMU at 34 to 33 shots.
The â€Â˜Cats return home next weekendto take on CCHA foe Western Michigan (Feb. 6-7) with thepuck dropping at 7:35 p.m. bothnights.
