Lost Weekend For 'Cats In Alaska

 

FAIRBANKS, Alaska â€Â“ Entering the weekend against the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks theâ€Â˜Cats were almost perfect with a 13-0-3 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark at the Carlson Center.  The â€Â˜Cats were swept in Fairbanksthis weekend as the Nanooks defeated the â€Â˜Cats 5-2 on Saturday night.  UAF had defeated the â€Â˜Cats 1-0 on Fridaynight.

 

NMU drops to 10-11-1 overall and 8-10-0 in the CCHA.  The Nanooks are now 11-11-0 and 10-8-0 in the conference. The loss sinks NMU to eighth in the conference standings.

 

UAF jumped out to a 2-0 lead whenthey scored twice within a little over a two minute span in the firstperiod.  Alex Sawruk got the â€Â˜Cats on theboard and split the lead in half to 2-1when he scored his fifth goal of the season at 19:42of the opening period.  Alan Swanson andZach Tarkir assisted on the goal.

 

Jamie Milam then tied the game,with his seventh goal of the season, at two-all with a power-play goal at 10:49 of the second period.  His goal was assisted by Nathan Oystrick andDarin Olver.

 

The Nanooks would add a goal in thesecond period and two in the third for the final margin.  Their final goal was an empty netter at 19:26 of the third period.

 

UAF had 45 shots on the night to 30for the â€Â˜Cats.  Craig Kowalski had 40saves on the night for NMU.  KeithBartusch for UAF registered 28 saves. NMU had three power play chances on the night while UAF scored onepower-play goal in six opportunities.

 

The â€Â˜Cats are back home nextweekend when they will host Notre Dame (Jan. 23-24) as the puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. both nights.
