Aqua-'Cats Swim To Home Meet Win


 

MARQUETTE, Mich.â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University womenâ€Â™s swim team hostedtheir lone home dual meet of the season on Saturday.  The Aqua-â€Â˜Cats defeated St. Norbert by a78-59 score. 

The team captured every event butone for the victory.  Shelly Ruspakka,Larisa Graham, Sarah Bartosh and Sam Pechek swam a 1:59.02 in the opening eventof the meet, the 200-yard medley relay. The next event, the 1000 freestyle the Aqua-â€Â˜Cats took the top twoplaces as Lindsey Vermillion won the event in a clocking of 11:46.79, teammateKara Freebury was second (11:47.14). Pechek won the next event of the meet which was the 200 freestyle(2:00.50).

In the next two events the NMUswimmers took the top three places in both events.  Ruspakka, a senior who was swimming in herfinal home dual meet of her career, won the 50 freestyle (25.97), CricketKnight was second (26.19) and Julie Weiler was third (26.69).  Weiler was also swimming in her final homemeet of her career on Saturday.  LarisaGraham won the next event which was the 200 I.M. with a time of 2:15.26; Bartoshwas second 2:16.45 and third was Anna Herman (2:19.93).

Bartosh then turned around and wonthe 100 butterfly (1:01.64) as Herman was second (1:03.64).  Pechek and Knight went one-two in the 100freestyle with times of 56.00 and 58.06 respectively. 

Ruspakka then picked up her thirdwin of the meet with a time of 1:02.06 in the 100 backstroke.  Weiler was second in the event with a time of1:05.91.  Vermillion then won her secondevent of the meet with a time of 5:32.75 in the 500 freestyle.  Freebury was second in the event(5:39.75).  Graham then picked up herthird win of the day in the final individual event of the meet, the 100breaststroke (1:11.25).

Kathie Cole, who was diving in herfinal home meet, won both boards on the afternoon.  She won the one-meter board with aseason-best score of 265.72 and then won the three-meter event with a score of268.35.  Teammate, Michelle Ruiz scored193.57 on the one-meter board and 190.72 on the three meter.

NMU has one more dual meet to theseason when they travel to Allendale, Mich.to take on Grand Valleyon Jan. 31.  The team will then be at theGLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Hillsdale from Feb. 19-22.
