FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - The Central Collegiate HockeyAssociation (CCHA) announced today that senior goalie Craig Kowalski of Northern Michigan has been named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of theMonth for December.
The 22-year old from Clinton Township, Mich., recorded shutouts in three of fourgames he played in December. His statistics for the month included a 3-0-1record, 0.73 goals-against average and .977 save percentage.
Kowalski started the month with a 28-save home-ice blankingof Lake SuperiorStateUniversity on Dec. 6 that made him Northern Michigan's career shutout leader with nine whitewashes. He brokethe record again the following night on the road with a 34-save effort againstthe Lakers. Following a 3-3 tie on
Dec. 12 at Michigan Tech of the WCHA (where he was calledupon to make five saves in overtime), Kowalski recorded his third shutout ofthe month in a 2-0 home-ice win over the Huskies.
Kowalski, who was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the2000 NHL Entry Draft, leads the CCHA in saves in conference games with 416 andis tied for the league lead in shutouts with three. He is also the overall points leader in the annual PeraniCup competition, which awards points to players throughout the season each timethey are named a "star of the game."ÃƒƒÃ‚‚Ãƒ‚Ã‚ Kowalski has been named a game star in eight of the Wildcats 14contests, including six first-star selections.
