IRONWOOD, Mich. â€Ã‚“ The Northern Michigan womenâ€Ã‚™s Nordic ski teamopened their season over the weekend at the Grand View XC Challenge, which washeld at the Wolverine Nordic Ski Club in Ironwood, Mich.


Rachel Daw won the College Womenâ€Ã‚™sFreestyle event on Saturday with a time of 26:06.4 as teammate Caitlin Comptonwas second (26:40.3).  The â€Ã‚˜Cats alsotook the next two places in the event as Maria Stuber was third (26:47.2) andAniya Deitz was fourth (27:01.6).


NMU placed two more skiers in thetop 10 as Katherine Huemmer was seventh (28:00.9) and Stephanie Howe was eighth(29:22.0).


Lindsey Weier won the OJ Womenâ€Ã‚™sFreestyle event with a clocking of 25:48.4 with teammate Lindsay Williams insecond place (26:45.4).


On Sunday the â€Ã‚˜Cats took the topsix places in the College Womenâ€Ã‚™s Classical event.  Daw won the event with a time of 17:24.2 asteammate Howe was 24 seconds behind her in second place (17:48.6).  Deitz was the next â€Ã‚˜Cat in third place(17:52.3) as Compton was fourth(17:58.7).  Stuber finished in fifthplace (18:14.4) and Huemmer was sixth (19:02.8) for the â€Ã‚˜Cats.


NMU took the top three places inthe OJ Womenâ€Ã‚™s Classical race with Weier taking home the title in a time of17:06.2.  Williams was next (17:14.3)followed by Jennifer Wygant (18:30.9). 


The next event on the schedule forthe skiers is the U.S. National Championships in Mainewhich will be held January 3-10, 2004.
