MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Ã‚“ Northern Michigan Universitycame out of their Halloween contest pulling a couple tricks and leaving thefans with a treat as they defeated the USNTDP U-18 squad at the Berry Events Centeron Friday night with a frightening score of 8-3.  Hundreds of witches, goblins, and ghouls wereat the BEC in support of the â€Ã‚˜Cats, tallying the attendance to 3,850.


The U-18 team gave the â€Ã‚˜Cats a scare by and scoring thefirst two goals of the game.  KevinPorter scored the first goal for the young squad just 3:45 into the game with Geoff Paukovich and Bryan Lergassisting on the goal.  Brandon Scero putthe puck between the pipes at 9:42 ofthe opening period to make the score 2-0. Nathan Davis and Mike Brennan assisted. The Wildcats wouldnâ€Ã‚™t remainscoreless for long as Darin Olver would score an unassisted goal at 13:31 of the opening period to make the score2-1. 


NMU would tie up the game at two-all in the second period onMatt Hunterâ€Ã‚™s goal at 9:01 of themiddle period.  Former U-18 player BobbySelden assisted on the goal with Jordan Bianchin.  The â€Ã‚˜Cats took their first lead of the night uppingthe score to 3-2 at 15:59 when Geoff Waugh scored a goal from Matt Ciancio andPatrick Murphy. 


USNTDP U-18â€Ã‚™s came out 42 seconds into third period to tiethe game at three when Nate Hagemo scored their last and final goal of thenight.  Assisting on the goal werePaukovich and Lerg.  NMU dominated theice from that point on in the third period of play by scoring five of theireight goals. 


Patrick Murphy scored the game-winner at 2:16 of the third period.  Alex Sawruk and Matt Cianco assisted on thegame-winning goal.  Murphy said, â€Ã‚œI justtried to play my game, get some shots off, and make some hitsâ€Ã‚¦it worked out forthe best.â€Ã‚


Sawruk came through for NMU at 5:22 of the third by scoring the first of his two goalson the night. Murphy and Ciancio assisted to make the score 5-3.  Andrew Contois would help in stretching thelead to 6-3 scoring at 11:33.  Pat Bateman and Dirk Southern were there forthe assist. Ã‚  NMUâ€Ã‚™s Matt Maunu scored forthe â€Ã‚˜Cats at 16:00 with USNTDP U-18alum Dusty Collins and Olver assisting on the goal.  Sawruk would seal the deal for the â€Ã‚˜Cats withan unassisted goal at 19:10, for hissecond of the night, for the final margin.


Tuomas Tarkki played the entire game between the pipes forthe NMU making 16 saves. Jordan Pearce and Chris Carlson shared the duty ofdefending the goal for USNTDP U-18 totaling 32 saves.  Both teams could not convert power plays asNMU had two chances and U-18 had three. 


Northern Michigan will return to CCHAplay as they will play the Buckeyes of Ohio State on November 7-8 at the Berry Events Centerat 7:35 p.m. both nights.
