'Cats Score Four Second Period Goals In 8-2 Win

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Ã‚“ For the second Friday in a row theWildcats exploded for a ton of goals as they put eight on the board Fridaynight at the Berry Events Center.  Whenthe dust had settled the â€Ã‚˜Cats had the 8-2 win over the visiting the Universityof Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks.  NMU is now14-10-1 overall on the season and 10-7-0 in the CCHA.  UAF falls to 9-12-4 and 6-11-4. More importantly the â€Ã‚˜Cats are now 9-2-0 at home in the Berry EventsCenter.

The Nanooks struck first on the night with a goal at 9:25 ofthe opening period by Ryan Lang. Entering tonightâ€Ã‚™s game the â€Ã‚˜Cats were 3-5-0 when the opponent scoresfirst.  But the Nanooks lead would nothold up as Terry Harrison scored his 12th goal of the season at18:28 of the first period to tie the game. Mike Stutzel would give the â€Ã‚˜Cats the lead for good at 19:26 of theperiod on the power play for his 17th goal of the season.  Bryce Cockburn and Chris Gobertassisted.  For Gobert it was his firstgame back after missing the past four games because of an injury. 

The second period saw the â€Ã‚˜Cats put four goals on theboard.  Peter Michelutti started thegoal scoring with his fourth  goal ofthe season at 3:42.  Alex Sawruk andAndrew Contois assisted.  JasonGrinevitch made the score 3-2 when he scored for the Nanooks at 8:25.  Kevin Gardner made the score 4-2 with hisfifth goal of the season at 13:16 of the period.  Gobert and Geoff Waugh assisted. Stutzel would score his second power-play goal of the night at 16:53 tomake the score 5-2.  â€Ã‚œThe power play hasbeen great all year,â€Ã‚ Stutzel said.  â€Ã‚œItis definitely one of the strong points of our game.â€Ã‚ÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚  Cockburn and Gobert assisted on Stutzelâ€Ã‚™s 18th goal of theseason.  The final goal of the periodcame when Alan Swanson scored his fifth of the season at 17:16.  Freshmen Matt Ciancio and John Millerassisted to make the count 6-2.

Gobert struck in the third period at 6:40 for his eighthgoal of the season.  â€Ã‚œIt is a greatfeeling to be back,â€Ã‚ Gobert said.  â€Ã‚œYoujust want to be out there.â€Ã‚ÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚  Gardner andHarrison when given credit for the assist. The â€Ã‚˜Cats final goal of the game came when Michelutti scored his secondgoal of the night at 18:31.  ForMichelutti it was his fifth of the season as Ciancio assisted.  Gobert, with his four points on the night(1-3-4), took the overall point lead back as he now has a team-high 30 pointson the season (8-22-30).  He also leadsthe team in CCHA scoring with 21 points (7-14-21).  Cockburn and Ciancio both ended the night with two assistseach. 

The â€Ã‚˜Cats had 32 shots on goal for the night.  After the first 20 minutes of play theNanooks had 11 shots on goal to the â€Ã‚˜Cats six. The â€Ã‚˜Cats were two of three on the power play and are now 31 of 111 onthe season for .279 percent. 

Craig Kowalski picked up his 13th win of theseason as he had 26 saves on the night. 

The two teams will play against on Saturday night (Feb. 1)at 7:05 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
