Kowalski Ties Career Shutout Record

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Ã‚“ The first night of the weekend setbetween the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Northern Michigan was ascoring frenzy by the Wildcats as they won 7-3.  Move to Saturdayâ€Ã‚™s game and it was a different story as the â€Ã‚˜Catswon 2-0.  Craig Kowalski, a junior, withthe shutout now has eight for his Wildcat career.  He is now tied with Dan Ragusett who played for NMU from 1997-01with the all-time career shutout record. With the win the â€Ã‚˜Cats are now 13-10-1on the season and the Chargers are 13-9-2.

Kowalski had 25 saves on the night to pick up his thirdshutout on the season.  He had fiveshutouts entering the 2002-03 campaign. Ã¢Ã‚€ÃƒÃ‚‚œEverybody played a great defensive game today,â€Ã‚ Kowalski said.  â€Ã‚œThey blocked shots and got the puck out andid a great job.â€Ã‚ÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚  He had nine saves inthe first period, eight in the second period and eight in the thirdperiod.  Kowalski talked to Ragusettyesterday about tying his mark.  â€Ã‚œHetold me to get it tonight,â€Ã‚ Kowalski added. Ã¢Ã‚€ÃƒÃ‚‚œHe (Kowalski) played well tonight,â€Ã‚ Walt Kyle, the NMU head coach,said.  â€Ã‚œI thought that we did a betterjob defending him tonight.â€Ã‚

On the other side of things, Kevin Gardner was the entireoffensive power that the â€Ã‚˜Cats needed on Saturday night.  He tallied both goals for the â€Ã‚˜Cats.  His first goal came at 00:55 mark of thefirst period.  Terry Harrison and GeoffWaugh assisted.  His second goal of thenight came at the 11:06 mark of the second period.  Nathan Oystrick and Juha Alen assisted.  â€Ã‚œIt has been a struggle up and down, but coach gave me anopportunity this weekend,â€Ã‚ Gardner said. Ã¢Ã‚€ÃƒÃ‚‚œI had to take the most of it.â€Ã‚ÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚ On Friday night, Gardner had a goal and two assists.

After going four for seven on the power play on Friday theâ€Ã‚˜Cats did not score a power-play goal in five chances on Saturday night. 

The â€Ã‚˜Cats are home again next weekend (Jan. 31-Feb 1)against CCHA foe Alaska Fairbanks.
