'Cats Defeat CCHA Leading Ferris State

 

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. â€Ã‚“ A night when the NorthernMichigan University hockey team needed a win they picked a very good time toget one.  The â€Ã‚˜Cats defeated the CCHAleading Ferris State University hockey team, 3-1, on the Bulldogs home ice.  With the win the â€Ã‚˜Cats snapped theirthree-game losing skid.  NMU is now11-9-1 overall and 9-6-0 in the CCHA. Ferris drops to 16-6-1 and 11-3-1. NMU is now 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings in Big Rapids against FerrisState.

Bryce Cockburn scored his seventh goal of the season at 9:09of the second period on the power play to give the â€Ã‚˜Cats the early 1-0lead.  Jimmy Jackson and Dirk Southernassisted on the goal.  The Bulldogswould tie the game at 1-1 on a goal by Mike Kinnie at 13:38 of the second period.

Mike Stutzel for the third time this season would score twogoals in a game.  He gave the â€Ã‚˜Cats thelead for good (2-1) at 17:57 of the third period for his 15th goalof the year, which was a power play goal. Jackson picked up his second assist on the night as did Southern onStutzelâ€Ã‚™s goal.  The final goal of thegame came at 19:05 of the final period as Stutzel scored into an empty net forthe final margin of 3-1.  Southernpicked up his third assist of the night and his 16th of the seasonon the goal.  Nathan Oystrick picked upthe other helper on the goal.  The threeassists in a game for Southern ties a career-high for him, as this is thesecond time this season that he has had three assists in a game.

Craig Kowalski (10-8-1) was between the pipes for the â€Ã‚˜Catson Friday night as he came up with several fantastic saves to keep the â€Ã‚˜Cats inthe game.  He ended the night with 28saves and second star of the night honors. Cockburn was given the first star. The â€Ã‚˜Cats had 33 shots on goal to the Bulldogs 29.  On the power play the â€Ã‚˜Cats were two ofseven while FSU did not convert on six opportunities.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (Jan. 18) inBig Rapids for the second game of the CCHA weekend tilt.
