NMU Holds On For Win

 

 

 

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Ã‚“ The Northern Michigan menâ€Ã‚™sbasketball team held on Saturday afternoon at the Berry Events Center to defeatMercyhurst 76-71.  Leading by 14 pointsat halftime (45-31) the Wildcats held off a strong serge by the Lakers in thesecond half to pick up the win.  TheLakers cut the lead to 73-71 with 1:25 left in the game before Adrian Whittenmade a basket with 13 seconds left and converted one of his two three throwswith six seconds left in the contest. The Lakers had started the second half by going on a 19 to seven run.

The Wildcats have now won two of their past three games andare currently 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC.  Mercyhurst is now 9-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Milan Azanjac led the Wildcats with 14 points and sevenrebounds.  He made all eight of his freethrow attempts and had two blocks in the game. Marco Volcy added 12 points in the win. Steve Watts came off the bench to chip in with 11 points.

The Wildcats shot over 45 percent from the floor for thegame (23-51) and were 4-12 in three-pointers (33.3 percent).  At the free throw line the Wildcats were26-30 (86.7 percent).  Mercyhurst didout-rebound the Wildcats 36-35.

NMU will have a GLIAC South tour next week, as they are atFindlay (Jan. 9), Hillsdale (Jan. 11) and Wayne State (Jan. 13).
