HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Walt Kyle Era gotoff to a very good start on Saturday night in Houghton as the Wildcats defeatedthe Huskies by a score of 4-1. With the win Kyle picks up his first collegiatewin as the NMU head coach.
Chris Gobert scored the opening goal of the game at the 6:07 mark of the first period. Freshman Jamie Milam assisted on the goal, and picked up his first NMUpoint.
Frank Werner tied the game at 1-1 when he scored an unassisted goal for theHuskies at 2:35 of the second period. About seven minutes later in the period,Terry Harrison gave the Wildcats the lead for good on an assist from Milam andDirk Southern.
At the 12:00 minute mark of the third period, Southern scored his first goalfor the Green and Gold from Harrison and Kevin Gardner. Mike Stutzel added anempty net goal at 18:55 for the final tally on the night. Bryce Cockburn and Gobertassisted.
Craig Kowalski in goal for the Wildcats turned away 30 of the 31 shots hefaced.
The 'Cats are at the Ice Breaker Tournament next weekend in Madison, Wis. wherethey will face Boston University in the first game on Friday afternoon (4 p.m.Central).
