Shyiak Promoted To Associate Head Coach
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Walt Kyle theNorthern Michigan University Head Hockey Coach has announced that Dave Shyiakhas been promoted to associate head coach. Shyiak is in his eighth year on thestaff.
"He has been a big part of this program as a player and as a coach,"Kyle said. "He is very deserving of this promotion. Since I have beenhere, I have relied on him heavily to help integrate me back into collegehockey and to carry a lot of the things forward that Rick (Comley) has institutedinto this program."
Shyiak was named the recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats in 1995 and theteam has averaged about 20 wins a season since being named an assistant coach.The Wildcats participated in the NCAA National Tournament during the 1998-99 seasonbefore losing to Boston College. Shyiak came to NMU following two years as ahead coach in the British Columbia junior hockey leagues.
A co-captain on NMU's NCAA Championship squad in 1991, which posted aschool-record 38-5-4 win-loss mark, as well as a member of two WCHA PlayoffChampionship units (1989 and 1991), he received his bachelor's degree inphysical education from Northern Michigan in 1993. Shyiak was a four-timeletterwinner for the Wildcats.
"He is familiar with the university and how it operates. To me he isdefinitely my right hand man," Kyle added. "He is a guy I will relyon heavily to help me with many things. That is why I wanted to make sure hewas rewarded for that."
During the 1992-93 season, Shyiak served as a student-assistant whilecompleting work on his degree and helped guide the Wildcats to the NCAA FinalEight with a 21-18-4 record.
