MARQUETTE, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters earned six medals last weekend (April 5 -7) at the National University Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., capturing two gold medals, a silver and a bronze. They also added two bronze medals in individual lifts.
Earning gold were Ryan Borges of Bradenton, Fla, in the 62-kilogram weight class and Vanessa McCoy of Wichita Falls, Texas, in the 63kg class. Borges’ top lifts were 103 kg in the snatch and 125 kg in the clean and jerk for a 228 kg total. McCoy lifted 78 kg in the snatch and 101 kg in the clean and jerk for a179 kg total.
Lifting in the 85 kg weight class and earning a silver medal was John McGovern of Pensacola, Fla., who lifted 135 kg in the snatch and 172 kg in the clean and jerk for a 307 kg total.
Earning a bronze medal at 58 kg was Breanne Carlson of Peshtigo, Wis. Carlson lifted 70 kg in the snatch and 79 kg in the clean and jerk for a 149 kg total.
Individual lift bronze medalists were Kendra Miller of Plainwell and Andrew Vrabel of Highland, Ind. Miller earned her medal by lifting 83 kg in the clean and jerk in the 58 kg weight class. Vrabel, who competed at 77 kg, lifted 113 kg in the snatch.
The USOEC team finished the competition in second place with 52 points behind first-place Louisiana State University-Shreveport, 80 points. East Tennessee State University was third with 37pts.
