MARQUETTE, Mich. – United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Max Nowry was the top performer for Team USA, winning a gold medal at the Pan American Championships Friday (April 5) in Panama City, Panama.
Nowry, the 2012 University World champion, battled Cristian Novas Feliz of the Dominican Republic in the 55-kilogram final. Nowry took the victory in two periods, winning 6-0, 2-1.
On his way to winning the gold, Nowry defeated Abner Elel Vasquez of Guatemala in the quarter final 0-1, 3-1, 3-0. In the semi-final, he faced Jairo Medina Garcia of Venezuela, winning 1-0, 2-0.
Team USA ended the tournament in first place with 57 points, with Cuba in second with 50 pts. and Dominican Republic in third with 49 pts.
Helping USA take the team title were USOEC alumni Robbie Smith, who earned a silver medal at 120 kg, and Jake Fisher, earning a bronze at 74 kg.
The competition is the annual continental championship for North, South and Central American athletes.
