Wildcats Finish Day One at GLIAC Championship
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University indoor track and field team competed in day one at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday (Feb. 23) from Kelly Family Sports Complex at Grand Valley State University. Junior Mallory Celaya and senior Brooke Granquist each scored a point for the Wildcats.
Celaya broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run with an eighth place finish in 18:12.29.
Granquist finished eighth in the indoor pentathlon with 3,073 points. She had personal bests in the shot put portion of the pentathlon, with a toss of 31 feet, 8 inches, and the 800 run (2:29.89).
“A lot of athletes had personal bests today,” NMU coach Cheree Hicks said. “Everyone stepped up today and I’m really proud of our performances.”
The distance medley relay squad finished ninth with sophomore Katie Granquist, senior Colby West, freshman Jaylee Brown and sophomore Larissa Halonen running.
Senior Mariah Beaman placed 11th in the long jump, clearing 16 feet, 1 inch.
Junior Chelsea Farquhar (15th) and sophomore Olivia Howard (19th) also had top 20 races in the 5K.
Sophomore Brittni Wirtz qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash and had a personal best in the 200 with a 15th place finish in 26.25.
West qualified in the 400 with personal best time of 59.26 seconds.
Sydney Schultz also had a personal best time in the 400 (1:00.45), finishing 13th in qualifying.
“I’m expecting the momentum from today to carry over into tomorrow,” added Hicks. “Everyone is anxious to do their part and help out the team.”
Northern wraps up the GLIAC Championship on Sunday (Feb. 24).
