Women’s Basketball Plays at Home for Final Time

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team returns home for the final time of the regular season this weekend. The Wildcats host Lake Superior State University on Thursday and Northwood University on Saturday for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. Tip-off for Thursday’s game is at 5:30 p.m., with Saturday’s beginning at 3 p.m.

Northern sits at 11-12 overall and 8-11 in the GLIAC after being swept on the road over the weekend. Saginaw Valley State University took Thursday’s game, 81-77 in overtime and NMU was defeated, 87-70 by Wayne State University on Saturday.

In the game against SVSU, it marked the second straight overtime game for NMU and two players earned career-highs. Freshman forward Nea Makela ended the game with career-highs in both points (22) and rebounds (16). Freshman guard Anna Liewen added 15 points for the Wildcats, for a career-high.

On the season, sophomore guard Alyssa Colla leads the scoring column for the Wildcats with a 13.2 average per game. Sophomore guard Lauren Gruber also averages in the double figures with 12.0. On the rebound side, Makela pulls down 6.4 rebounds a game.

LSSU is 5-18 overall and 4-5 in the conference, for last place in the GLIAC North Division. The Lakers fell to Grand Valley State University, 73-53 on Thursday and to Ferris State University, 72-60 on Saturday. LSSU has lost nine games straight, with its last win at Northwood on Jan. 12.

Leading the offense for LSSU is Maria Blazejewski with a 17.6 average, good for the third highest point average in the conference. She also leads the Lakers in rebounds, averaging 6.7 a game.

Northern leads the all-time series against the Lakers, 48-35. NMU defeated LSSU, 58-52 in Sault Ste. Marie earlier this year (Jan. 24).

Northwood University is just one spot above the Wildcats in the North Division in sixth place with an 11-14 overall and 9-10 GLIAC record. Much like the Lakers, the Timberwolves were also swept by FSU and GVSU over the weekend. The Bulldogs won Thursday’s game, 68-57 and GVSU were victorious on Saturday, 60-57.

Rachel Church average 12.4 points for NU, and Lauren Robak averages 10.7. In rebounds, Kaitlin Susan averages 6.0 per game.

The Wildcats also lead all-time series against the Timberwolves with a record of 38-14. NU won the matchup, 65-52 on Jan. 26 in Midland. NMU has lost the last two games to the Timberwolves in Marquette.

Following Saturday’s game, there will be an Overtime Period Party at Hudson’s Classic Grill with d’oeuvres provided and a cash bar. The public is welcome to join the men’s and women’s players and coaches to celebrate the season. 

100.3 FM “The Point”, the official radio voice of the NMU Wildcats, will broadcast both games.
