Hockey Ends Non-Conference With Loss at Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell 8-2 to Michigan Tech in its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday (Feb. 12) night from the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Wildcats surrendered four goals in each of the first two periods and managed a goal in the second and in the final minute of play.

NMU is now 12-14-4 overall and finished 6-2 in its non-conference schedule, all against teams from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The loss also snapped a four-game winning streak over MTU. Tech improves to 10-14-4 on the season.

Junior forwards Erik Higby and Jake Johnson scored NMU’s two goals. Higby scored his fifth of the season 8:59 into the first from senior defenseman Scott Macaulay. Johnson scored with 50 second left from sophomores Nathan Taurence and Jake Baker for his third of the year.

The Huskies jumped out of the gates and scored 46 seconds into the game. Tanner Kero, Jacob Johnstone, Blake Pietila and Alex Petan buried the first period goals for the Huskies. Petan’s tally was on the power play.

Walker Hyland, Jujhar Khaira, Kero and Ryan Furne scored in the second period for MTU. Hyland and Kero’s goals were on the man advantage.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau started the game before being pulled midway through the first and replaced by freshman Michael Doan. Coreau reentered the game after MTU’s eighth goal at 15:09 into the second. Coreau had 14 saves while Doan added nine.

Phoenix Copley started between the pipes for the Huskies and finished with 18 saves during the first two periods. Jamie Phillips stopped six shots in the third.

NMU was 0-for-2 on the man advantage after five Tech penalties. The Huskies were 3-for-5 on the power play. Northern took nine penalties for 29 minutes.

Northern continues play this week with a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at Michigan State. Friday’s game is at 6:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Saturday is Wildcat Night Across the Country with a start time of 7:35 p.m. that will be aired on Fox Sports Detroit. Game Notes: NMU has seven five-minute major penalties this season…The last time NMU last at MTU was Oct. 9, 2009 (5-3)…The last time NMU gave up eight goals was Jan. 7, 2011 against Notre Dame (L, 8-1)…The last time NMU gave up eight goals to MTU was Oct. 18, 1997 (L, 8-2)…Higby has 12 career goals…Johnson has four career goals.
