ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University indoor track and field team competed in the Grand Valley State University Big Meet from Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 8-9). The meet consisted of 85 teams and over 1,700 athletes.
Northern had 17 runners and three field event participants place in the top 50 for the afternoon.
Sophomore Larissa Halonen was the top runner of the day for NMU, finishing 13th in the one-mile run with a time of 5:16. 64. Sophomore Kelsey Noah and freshman Catherine Swiderski placed 42nd and 43rd in the race.
The Wildcats placed five in the top 50 of the 3,000-meter run. Junior Mallory Celaya led in 16th place, while junior Chelsea Farquhar was four spots back. Senior Rita Woitas finished 29th, sophomore Emily Allen was 30th and senior Brittany Looms, 45th.
Senior Colby West finished 31st in the 200 dash, with sophomore Brittni Wirtz one spot back. Wirtz finished 19th in the 60 dash on Friday. West also added a 26th place finish in the 400 dash along with junior Sydney Schultz (36th) and senior Brooke Granquist (50th) placing for NMU. Granquist had a 33rd place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
In the 800 run, sophomore Katie Granquist was the top Wildcat in 28th place. Redshirt freshman Abby Roche placed 48th and sophomore Caitlin Keskey was 50th.
In field events, junior Cheyenne Stewart was at the top for NMU with a ninth place finish in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches. She was also 22nd in the long jump. Junior Delany Lovett was 12th in the triple jump (34-11.25).
The distance medley team of Halonen, Katie Granquist, freshman Jaylee Brown and junior Evelyn Ruiz finished in 19th with a time of 12:58. 62.
Northern will compete in its lone home meet of the season on Saturday (Feb. 16) from the Superior Dome.
