Wildcats Shutout Ferris State on Saturday
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team snapped its three-game losing streak and earned a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split with Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 9). Junior goaltender Jared Coreau and the Wildcats earned their first shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory.
NMU is now 12-13-4 overall and 6-12-4-1 in the CCHA. Ferris drops to 14-12-4 overall and 12-10-2-1 in conference action.
Coreau had 19 saves while sophomore forward Mitch Jones had a goal and an assist and senior forward Matt Thurber added two assists to bring his season total to 22.
Jones opened the scoring 8:09 into the game with his first of the season on a sharp-angled shot that he put top shelf over FSU goaltender CJ Motte. Senior forward Kory Kaunisto and junior defenseman CJ Ludwig assisted on the goal.
The Green and Gold added to the lead as sophomore forward Reed Seckel buried a one-timer from Thurber and freshman forward Darren Nowick late in the second period (19:33).
Junior forward Stephan Vigier scored his fifth of the season with a power-play tally with five minutes (15:32) left in the game. Thurber and Jones assisted on the goal.
The two teams combined for 18 penalties. NMU was 1-for-6 on the man advantage and FSU was 0-for-4.
Motte finished with 30 saves as Northern outshot the road team 33-19.
Northern plays three games next week, beginning on Tuesday at Michigan Tech. The ‘Cats then travel to East Lansing for the only meeting of the season with the Michigan State Spartans on Friday and Saturday.
