Weightlifters Qualify For Events
Marquette, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting athletes qualified for events by lifting qualifying totals during a team event sanctioned by USA Weightlifting this past Monday (Jan. 21).
Brian Budd, of Okenos, Mich., earned his way into the 2013 National Junior Championships, which will be held Feb. 16-17 in Foster City, Calif.
Competing at 94 kilograms, Budd lifted 100 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk for a 230-kg total.
Joshua Barnett and Brennan Jaquint both re-qualified for the University Nationals held April 4-7 in Johnson City, Tenn. Both athletes had previously qualified for the event, but injuries had prevented them from lifting qualifying totals since participating in previous competitions.
Barnett, of Sanford, Fla., who lifts in the 62- kg weight class, hoisted 65 kg in the snatch and 85 kg in the clean and jerk for a 150-kg total.
Jaquint, of Evansville, Wis., competed at 105 kg. He lifted 120 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk for a 250-kg total.
Other athletes in the meet lifted personal records. At 53 kg, Annie Bengry of Marquette, Mich., lifted a 106-kg total. Ryan Borges of Bradenton, Fla., lifted a new total of 224 kg in the 62-kg weight class. Lifting at 81 kg for a new personal total of 250 kg was Chris Young of Oakland, Mich. John McGovern of Pensacola, Fla., lifted a new total of 295 kg.
Coach Vance Newgard was pleased with the personal records.
“Usually, to exceed a personal record, the athletes have peaked for an event,” said Newgard. “These athletes were training through the event, so this is a very positive sign of improvement.”
