Hockey Hosts No. 6 Miami

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team gets back to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend with a series from the Berry Events Center against the No. 6-ranked Miami University RedHawks. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 11-12).

NMU is 8-10-3 overall and 2-9-3-1 in the CCHA. The Wildcats currently sit in 11th place in the CCHA with 10 points. Senior forward Matt Thurber (1-15) leads NMU with 16 points. Sophomore forward Reed Seckel (8-7=15) and junior forward Stephen Vigier (3-9=12) also have over 10 points. Seckel (8) and sophomore Ryan Daugherty (7) lead the team in goals. Junior goaltender Jared Coreau is 8-10-3 on the season with a 2.66 goals against average and a 91.8 save percentage.

Miami is 12-4-4 overall and tied for the top spot in the CCHA at 8-3-3-3 and 30 conference points. The RedHawks are ranked No. 6 in this week’s USCHO.com Top 20 Poll and No. 6 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Top 15 Poll. Riley Barber (8-14=22) and Austin Czarnik (7-15=22) lead the team in points. Jay Williams is 9-2-3 between the pipes with a 1.91 goals against average and 92.7 save percentage. The RedHawks are 5-3-1 on the road and have won two of their last three games.

The two teams met earlier this season (Nov. 9-10) in Oxford for NMU’s first CCHA road series. The RedHawks defeated the ‘Cats 5-2 on Friday and the two teams tied 2-2 on Saturday. Miami won the shootout at the end of overtime. Miami was ranked No. 5 at the time. Sophomore forward DJ Vandercook and junior defenseman CJ Ludwig scored the goals on Friday. Sophomore forward Ryan Kesti and Vigier scored on Saturday. Senior forward Kory Kaunisto and Vigier missed their shootout chances.

NMU leads the all-time series 34-21-4 and 21-7-1 in Marquette. NMU is winless in four straight games.

NMU swept its final non-conference series at No. 15 St. Cloud last weekend (Jan. 4-5). The ‘Cats scored a season-high six goals on Friday for a 6-2 win. NMU won its fourth straight over the Huskies with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Four players had multiple point games in Friday’s 6-2 win. Reed Seckel had two goals. Matt Thurber and Erik Higby each had three assists. CJ Ludwig added a goal and an assist.

Head coach Walt Kyle earned his 200th victory on Friday. Kyle is in his 11th season on the bench for the Wildcats. His all-time record is 201-177-48. He has led NMU to six 20-win seasons and to the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10. The ‘Cats have been to the CCHA Tournament at Joe Louis Arena seven times under Kyle.

Reed Seckel is the Postgame Offensive Player of the week after he scored two goals Friday’s 6-2 win. He scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the 2-1 win on Saturday. Seckel also finished the weekend +4.

Kyle Follmer is the Gladiator Defenseman of the Week. He scored his first two goals of the season with a goal each night. He also blocked three shots and was +2 on the weekend. 

Jared Coreau is the Warrior Goaltender of the Week.  He stopped 21 shots on Friday and made 37 saves on Saturday for his 11th game of the season with over 30 saves.
