MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team travels below the bridge this weekend for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. NMU will matchup against Grand Valley State University on Thursday (Jan. 10) at 8 p.m. and will travel to Ferris State University on Saturday (Jan. 12) with tip-off at 3 p.m.
Northern enters the week at 8-4 and 5-3 in the conference after splitting its games over the weekend from the Berry Events Center. On Thursday (Jan. 3), the ‘Cats were defeated 63-46 to No. 1-ranked Ashland University, but were able to end the weekend on a high note with the 68-63 victory over Lake Erie College on Saturday (Jan. 5). Sophomore guard Lauren Gruber leads the way for NMU averaging 12.7 points a game, while sophomore guard Alyssa Colla tallies 10.4. On the boards, freshman forward Nea Makela averages six in each game and Gruber averages five.
GVSU sits in fourth place, just above NMU in the GLIAC North Division, with a 5-3 conference record. The Lakers spilt the weekend after defeating Walsh University 84-53 on Thursday and fell 61-48 to Malone University. Briauna Taylor averages 14 points per game for GVSU, and averages 6.9 rebounds.
Ferris State is the top team in the North with an 8-3 GLIAC record. The Bulldogs are currently on a six-game winning streak after being victorious over Malone (54-53) and Walsh (77-59) last weekend. Sarah DeShone averages 21.1 points in 11 games for the Bulldogs and Kara Hess averages 6.3 boards a game.
