MARQUETTE, Mich. – After sweeping last weekend at home, the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team travels to the Lower Peninsula for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. The Wildcats first take on Grand Valley State University on Thursday (Jan. 10) at 6 p.m. and then travel to Ferris State University on Saturday (Jan. 12) with tip-off at 1 p.m.
Coach Doug Lewis’s squad now stands at 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the GLIAC on the season. NMU defeated Ashland 73-66 on Thursday and Lake Erie College 66-5 on Saturday, for its first two-game winning streak of the season.
Junior forward Matthew Craggs leads Northern in points and rebounds, averaging 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Junior forward Scooter Johnson is also in double figures (10.1) while freshman Stephen Pelkofer is averaging 8.8 points. Craggs and Pelkofer have started all 12 games.
GVSU enters Thursday’s game after splitting on the weekend with a loss against Walsh University (83-79) on Thursday and a 78-63 win over Malone University on Saturday. The Lakers are third in the GLIAC North Division with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the conference. Ryan Sabin leads the way for the Lakers averaging 12.5 points per game while Tyrone Lee averages 10.5. Lee also leads the rebound column with an average of six a game.
Ferris State is 6-6 and 5-3 in the GLIAC after defeating Malone and Walsh last Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Kenny Brown leads the Bulldogs with an average of 17.5 points in 11 games while Daniel Sutherlin tallies an average of 7.3 boards a game.
