SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams raced the freestyle races at the 2013 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships on Friday (Jan. 4).
Junior Erik Soderman led the men’s team, finishing 19th overall and sixth in the men’s under 23 (MU23) age division. He finished the 15-kilometer course in 39:06.9.
“That’s Erik’s style,” NMU coach Sten Fjeldheim said. “He always starts really relaxed, does a good job of pacing himself and just keeps getting faster and faster.”
Junior George Cartwright was eight spots back of Soderman in 27th and eighth in MU23. Sophomore Kyle Bratrud (29th) was also in the top 30 and fifth in the men’s under 19 (MOJ).
Senior Chris Bowler (55th, 21st MU23), freshman Sam Elfstrom (124th, 30th MOJ) and junior Ben Hugus (152nd, 57th MU23) rounded out the skiers for the men.
Junior Rosie Frankowski led the women’s team in 30th and 12th in the female under 23 age group (FU23). She finished the 10K course in 32:28.4.
“It amazing to see how far Rosie has come,” Fjeldheim said. “She has worked as hard and as diligently as anyone. If there was an all-uphill race, I can’t think of anyone that could beat Rosie Frankowski. She’s that tough.”
Junior Jordyn Ross (59th, 20th FU23), freshman Elizabeth Simak (84th, 26th FU23), freshman Mary Kate Cirelli (86th, 27th FU23) and freshman Hannah Boyer (91st, 20th FOJ) also finished in the top 100. Freshman Megan Edic (124th, 30th FOJ) also skied for the ‘Cats.
The teams will compete Sunday (Jan. 6) in the classic races.
