MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team will tip-off 2013 by hosting two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games from the Berry Events Center this weekend. The Wildcats will face No. 1-ranked Ashland University on Thursday (Jan. 3) at 7:30 p.m. and Lake Erie College on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 3 p.m.

NMU enters the week at 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC after its last competition on Dec. 18, in which Northern was defeated 75-63 by Tiffin University. Sophomore guard Laruen Gruber leads the ‘Cats averaging 12 points a game, while sophomore guard Alyssa Colla averages 11. Freshman forward Nea Makela leads the boards with six per game, and sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin averages five.

Ashland is a perfect 13-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. The Eagles have three players who average double figures per game. Kari Daugherty leads with a 23.6 average, Daiva Gerbec with 12.5 and Alyssa Miller with 10.8. Daugherty also leads on the boards averaging 15 in each contest, and Gerbec with 8.2.

Lake Erie (2-6, 0-5 GLIAC) is still searching for its first GLIAC victory entering Saturday’s matchup. The Storm fell to Cleveland State, 70-51 in a non-conference game on Sunday (Dec. 30). Ashar Harris averages 16 points per game for the Storm, along with 13.9 rebounds.

100.3 FM “The Point”, the official radio voice of the NMU Wildcats, will broadcast both games.
