Men’s Basketball Hosts Hillsdale and Findlay

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After falling in its opening games of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team returns home this weekend. The Wildcats will face off against Hillsdale College on Thursday (Dec. 6) at 5:30 p.m., and the University of Findlay on Saturday (Dec. 8) at 1 p.m.

Northern (1-4; 0-2 GLIAC) was defeated twice in Canton, Ohio over the weekend, falling to Walsh University, 75-68 on Thursday. In Saturday’s matchup against Malone University, the Pioneers took the 75-66 advantage. It was the first time NMU faced both teams.

Junior forward Matthew Craggs leads NMU in points, averaging 14.2 points per game, while redshirt freshman guard Terry Nash averages 12. On the board, Craggs averages 6.8 rebounds a game while junior forward Scooter Johnson and sophomore forward Kendall Jackson average 5.6.

Hillsdale enters the weekend undefeated in all games (5-0; 2-0 GLIAC) after sweeping the weekend at home. The Chargers defeated Northwood University, 60-56 on Thursday and took a 71-57 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday. Tim Dezelski leads the Chargers averaging 16.6 points a game in five starts, and leads total rebounds with a 10.8 average.

The ‘Cats hold the 32-20 advantage over the Chargers, but have fallen in each of the last six meetings. A season ago, Hillsdale defeated NMU 89-41 from Hillsdale, Mich. In the game, the Chargers led the ‘Cats from beginning to end, TJ Cameron led NMU with 11 points.

Findlay is also undefeated in the conference (4-1; 2-0 GLIAC) after the weekend. On Thursday, the Oilers hosted Lake Superior State with the 85-63 victory. Against Northwood on Saturday, Findlay walked away with the 84-72 win. For the Oilers, Greg Kahlig averages 19.4 points and six rebounds per game. Mark Frilling also averages six rebounds.

The Oilers lead the all-time series against NMU, 14-3. The ‘Cats were defeated 85-76 in the meeting between the two teams last season, despite the 37-31 lead NMU held at the half. Sophomore guard Quinten Calloway had 23 points on 5-of-9 shots from beyond the arc.
