Swimmers Finish Second at Calvin Invite

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team completed competition at the three-day Calvin Invite on Saturday (Dec. 1) from Venema Aquatic Center. The Wildcats finished second out of 12 schools with 774 points, trailing Grand Valley State University (824).

“We did much better in finals tonight,” said head coach Heidi Voigt. “Last year, we placed third with only 460 points."

NMU dominated the 200-yard breaststroke with freshman Caitlyn Brenden winning the event followed by sophomore Madisen Sechena, senior Olga Budiansky and sophomore Aspen McHugh in spots three, four and five.

Freshman Crystal Bennet won the 100 butterfly, setting a new meet record in 56.14. She was also third in the 100 freestyle while senior Lauren Cockels finished seventh in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the 100 freestyle.

Senior Gaby Alzaga and sophomore Emily Bourguignon placed third and fourth in the 200 backstroke. Sophomores Jordan Iverson and Tara Dowling were fifth and sixth in the 500 freestyle.

In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Debbi Lawrence finished fourth while Brenden and sophomore Emily Brennan placed seventh and eighth.

Sophomore Molly Kearney placed second in the one-meter dive with 409 points.

The 400 freestyle realay team with Bennet, Bourguignon, Cockels and Lawrence placed second in 3:00.05.

The 200 medley relay squad finished with a time of 1:47.72 for third place. Bourguignon, Budiansky, Bennet and Cockels made up the relay team.

Northern will take the month of December off and will resume competition on Jan. 6th in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
