MARQUETTE, Mich. – Freshman Cohen Adair, of the Northern Michigan University hockey team, was named NMU’s Student-Athlete Scholar of the Month for October by the Athletic Council

Adair is a computer science major from Stratford, Ontario. Dr. Olga J. Hocking from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department nominated Adair.

“Cohen carries one of the highest average grades in my MA171 class on Introduction to Probability and Statistics,” Hocking said. “His attendance is excellent and he always notifies me in advance of upcoming potential absences due to team activities. When he is required to be absent, he makes up any missed work immediately or turns in assignments ahead of schedule to compensate for his absence. Even when his attendance is not required, i.e. when we are reviewing a test on which he has a perfect score, he stays in class to possibly learn more.”

“Cohen actively participates in class discussions and asks good thought-provoking questions,” Hocking added. “He has a very humble attitude and he is very courteous. His desire to learn and achieve academically is as impressive as his performance on the ice. He always gives 110 percent, and is above and beyond what’s required. I truly admire our athletes who realize the importance of their academic achievements as well as their athletic ones. Cohen Adair is definitely such an athlete and deserving of this award.”

Adair is currently tied for the team lead with five goals. He has twice been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week.
