MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team travels to Canton, Ohio for a pair of games this weekend to begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats match-up against Walsh University on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 6 p.m. and Malone University on Saturday (Dec. 1) at 1 p.m.

Northern (1-2) enters the week after falling in two games at the Fresh Coast Classic in Milwaukee, Wis. The ‘Cats fell to Winston-Salem State, 78-69 on Friday (Nov. 23) and Lincoln University, 67-56 on Saturday (Nov. 24). On Friday, NMU was led by freshman Stephen Pelkofer and junior Matthew Craggs who each had 15 points. Junior Scooter Johnson led the team with seven rebounds.

In the contest against Lincoln, redshirt freshman guard Terry Nash led the way with 12 points, while Craggs (11) and senior forward TJ Cameron (10) also had double digits. Johnson once again led the boards with eight rebounds.

Walsh remains undefeated at 3-0 after a 122-58 victory over Akron-Wayne College on Monday evening. The Cavaliers were led by Nikola Knezevic who scored a career-high 18 points off the bench. Brad DuPont had 16 points as all 14 Cavalier players scored.

Malone is 2-1 on the season after suffering two loses on the weekend at the Hoops for Hope Challenge.  In Monday’s exhibition contest against Southern Methodist, Malone was defeated 81-47 from Dallas, Texas. The Pioneers were led by Isaiah Elliott with 18 points, all from three-point range as he went six-of-eight for the night. David Goodwater followed with eight points, and led the team with seven rebounds.

On Wednesday (Nov. 21), the Pioneers faced its first loss of the regular season against non-conference Missouri State University, 82-49. Cory Veldhuizen led Malone with 13 points and seven rebounds, while David Goodwater added 10 points off the bench. Before facing NMU on Saturday, the Pioneers will open up GLIAC play against Michigan Tech on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 6 p.m.

This will be the first meetings for NMU against Walsh and Malone, as this is the inaugural season for both schools in the GLIAC. Walsh and Malone are former members of the American Mideast Conference.
