MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opens the regular season, hosting NAIA opponent Davenport University on Saturday (Nov. 10). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.
The Wildcats played two exhibition games last week. On Sunday (Oct. 28) NMU defeated Madonna 58-53. Sophomore Alyssa Colla led all scorers with 16 points, while freshman Anna Liewen added 14. In Saturday’s (Nov. 3) exhibition finale, the ‘Cats defeated UW-Superior 56-43 in Wisconsin. Colla once again led with 14. Sophomores Lauren Gruber and Abbey DeBruin each had 10 points.
Davenport enters the game after defeating Cardinal Stritch University, 78-66 in the season-opener on Friday (Nov. 2) from Grand Rapids, Mich. Karli Harris led the Panthers with 16 points, while Emily Nielsen (12) and Kayleigh VanKeulen (10) also added double figures. The Panthers finished the game with 27 field goals and were 21-for-30 from the charity stripe.
This is the second meeting between the two schools. The first meeting was last season when the ‘Cats defeated the Panthers 56-50 to snap Davenport’s 31-game home winning streak. Colla led NMU with 12 points and four rebounds.
