Volleyball Closes Out Season at Home
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team finishes out the regular season at home this weekend with two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchups. The Wildcats face Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Nov. 9) at 7 p.m. and Lake Superior State University on Saturday (Nov. 10) at 4 p.m. from Vandament Arena.
Seniors Kalin Zimmerman, Andree Ring, Jasmine Calhoun and Bailey Franklin will play in their final match in the Green and Gold on Saturday.
Northern split last weekend at home and is now 18-11 overall and 10-6 in the conference. On Friday evening, the ‘Cats defeated Hillsdale in four sets. Junior Lina Lopes had 17 kills in the match, and the team finished the game with 55 kills for a .312 attack percentage. Zimmerman contributed a season-high 17 digs. Northwood came to town on Saturday, and swept the ‘Cats in three close sets. The Timberwolves edged NMU 25-22 in set one, and then 25-23 and 25-21 in sets two and three.
SVSU (11-17 and 6-10 GLIAC) enters the weekend after falling at home to Grand Valley State and Ferris State. In Friday’s matchup against the Lakers, the Cardinals took the first two sets (25-17 and 26-24) before falling in the next three (25-23, 25-20 and 15-9). Lyndsay Reynolds led SVSU with a career-high 19 kills on 47 attacks and also contributed three aces and three blocks. On Saturday against No. 25 Ferris State, the Bulldogs defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. FSU won the first two sets (25-23 and 25-17), allowing SVSU to take the third (26-24), but it wasn’t enough, as the Bulldogs clinched the fourth set (26-24) for the match. Kate Czopek led for Saginaw with a team-high 17 kills and 12 digs.
The ‘Cats lead the all-time series against the Cardinals, 50-9. NMU fell 3-1 in both of the meetings last season. Earlier this season, NMU traveled to University Center, and defeated SVSU 3-2. NMU took set one before losing the second and third, but were able to answer back by taking the last two. Lopes had a season-high 18 kills in the match, with 14 digs and two service aces and a block attack. Junior Kalli Herron had 14 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.
Lake Superior State (4-23 and 1-15 GLIAC) was defeated twice at home over the weekend by Ferris State and Grand Valley State. The Lakers fell in three straight sets both nights for their 12th straight loss. On Friday against FSU, the Lakers played one of its strongest games of the season. The Bulldogs took the sets 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22. LSSU finished with 41 total kills to FSU’s 51. In Saturday’s match against GVSU, LSSU was defeated, 28-26, 25-14 and 25-16.
NMU leads 69-16-1 in the meetings between the two schools. Northern has taken the last 13 contests, including two 3-0 victories last season and a 3-1 decision on Sept. 15 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Freshman Lisa Studnicka had 17 kills for the afternoon. Her and Lopes had 14 digs each.
