Volleyball Travels to Lower Peninsula

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team travels outside of the Upper Peninsula for the final time of the regular season for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches over the weekend. The Wildcats take on Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 26) at 7 p.m. and Ferris State on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 3 p.m.

Head coach Dominic Yoder’s squad is 15-9 overall and 7-4 in the GLIAC after sweeping Ohio Dominican and Tiffin over the weekend from Vandament Arena. NMU snapped its three-match losing streak on Friday by defeating ODU 3-1. Junior Lina Lopes and junior Kalli Herron each finished with a match-high 12 kills apiece. In Saturday’s matchup, the ‘Cats swept the Dragons in three straight sets. Lopes had another match-high with 15 kills, while Herron and freshman Lisa Studnicka each added 14.

GVSU (18-4 and 8-3) comes into the matchup on a nine-match win streak and a four-match shutout streak after blanking Wayne State and Findlay on the road last weekend. Abby Aiken (268 kills) and Betsy Ronda (252 kills) lead the Bulldog offense. Clair Ruhenkamp sets up the offense with 741 assists and Christina Canepa leads the defense with 289 digs.

NMU leads the series with GVSU, 48-45-2. The two teams split a pair of matches last season. The ‘Cats defeated the Lakers in three sets on Sept. 10 in Marquette, but lost 3-1 a month later in Allendale.

Ferris State is 18-1 overall and 17-5 in the GLIAC, for second place in the conference standings. The Bulldogs have won 10 consecutive conference matches, including two last weekend at Findlay and Wayne State. The Bulldogs attack is led by Anne Sutton (231 kills) and Courtney Rehm (206 kills). Samantha Fordyce has 802 assists and Brandie Merren has 383 digs.

The ‘Cats lead the Bulldogs, 45-41 in its all-time series. Last season, NMU defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in Marquette and then fell 3-1 in Big Rapids.
