MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team returns home to Vandament Arena for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches this weekend. The Wildcats play six of their final nine regular season matches at home. NMU faces Ohio Dominican at 7 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 19) and Tiffin at 4 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 20).
The Wildcats are 13-9 and 5-4 in the GLIAC. Over the weekend, the ‘Cats played in the fifth annual Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament. On Friday, NMU fell 3-0 to Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis and then came up short in five sets against Lewis on Saturday.
Juniors Lina Lopes (256) and Kalli Herron (244) lead the team with over 200 kills. Junior Kellisha Harley is third in the GLIAC averaging 9.91 assists per set. Junior Sarah Hamilton has 62 total blocks while freshman Alex Berger has 231 digs, good for 3.5 per set.
ODU (10-10, 4-5 GLIAC) finished 2-1 at the Crossover. The Panthers swept Saint Joseph’s in the opening match for its third straight win of the season. In Saturday’s matchups, Drury defeated Ohio Dominican 3-0, but the Panthers were able to come out ahead in its final match against Quincy, 3-2.
NMU and ODU will meet for only the third time, the ‘Cats have won the two previous meetings. The last meeting was a season ago in Marquette, with NMU winning 3-1. Northern took the first set (25-20) before the Panthers bounced back inth second (21-25). NMU finished strong winning the final two to take the match (25-23, 25-14).
Tiffin (1-7, 6-11 GLIAC) was 1-2 at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. The Dragons were defeated 3-0 by Wisconsin-Parkside and Kentucky Wesleyan. The lone win came in the last match of the weekend with a sweep over Maryville.
NMU leads the series against Tiffin, 6-0. In the 16 sets played between the two schools, the Dragons have only won one. The last meeting was in 2011 in Marquette with the ‘Cats defeating the Dragons, 3-0.
