Soccer on the Road for the Final Time

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team hits the road for the final time this season for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games in the Lower Peninsula. NMU faces Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 19) at 4 p.m. and Grand Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1 p.m.

The Wildcats enter the week 3-10 overall and 2-7 in conference play after being shut out twice over the weekend. On Friday (Oct. 12), NMU fell 2-0 to Ohio Dominican University and 3-0 to Ashland University on Sunday (Oct. 14). Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Musi had four saves on the weekend, in her first two career starts as goalkeeper.

Freshman Gabriella Garza, senior Amelia Johnson and sophomore Taylor Smith lead the ‘Cats with two goals each. Sophomore Tevun Sellers, senior Becky Fiorenza, freshman Tiffany Trembley and freshman Hailey Beyrand each have one goal.

Ferris State is 5-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs blanked Tiffin 1-0 and were shutout by Findlay 4-0 last weekend. Riley Wood leads the Bulldogs with five goals. Casey Shauman has three goals and three assists. Rachel McCollum has started all 13 games between the pipes. She has a 1.35 goals against average and a 77.1 save percentage.

The last time NMU and FSU met was last season in Marquette when the ‘Cats came ahead with the 1-0 advantage. The only goal of the game was off a shot on the right side of the box by Kim Rietveld. NMU leads the overall series, 10-6-3, but Ferris leads in Big Rapids, 4-3-2.

GVSU is 11-1-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the GLIAC. The Lakers were defeated 3-2 by Findlay in its first conference loss since Sept. 19, 2010, snapping a 10-game shutout streak. GVSU bounced back with a 2-0 shutout over Tiffin. Maria Brown leads the Lakers with eight goals. Teammate Kayla Addison has seven and Ashley Botts has six. Chelsea Parise is 11-1-2 as the goalkeeper with a 0.29 goals against and 89.7 save percentage.

Grand Valley defeated NMU in its last meeting, 5-0 from Marquette. GVSU leads the series, 2-19-1 and 0-11-1 in Allendale. The last time the ‘Cats defeated the Lakers was on Sept. 19, 2010 in a 1-0 victory at home.
