MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University cross country team finished with a perfect team score of 15 at its only home meet, the U.P. Championship on Friday (Oct. 12) afternoon at the NMU Golf Course. The first five runners and nine of the first 11 to cross the finish line were Wildcats. Michigan Tech finished second with 48 points and Finlandia had 86.
“The race went well,” NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. “The women ran great and ran in a pack during the first lap. It was an exciting day and a great day for the Wildcats.”
Junior Mandy Dye won the four-kilometer race in 14:45. Sophomore Larissa Halonen was five seconds back in second. Also scoring for the ‘Cats was freshman Megan Edic (14:52), freshman Mary Kate Cirelli (14:53) and junior Mallory Celaya (14:53).
Junior Jordyn Ross, sophomore Kate Granquist, senior Rita Woitas and freshman Alex Bott finished in spots eight through 11. Sophomores Emily Allen, Olivia Howard and Chelsea Farquhar and freshmen Hannah Boyer, Jaylee Brown and Elizabeth Simek also finished in the top 20.
The ‘Cats travel to the GLIAC Championship next week in Midland, Mich. hosted by Northwood University.
“It’s great to see how strong we’re running, heading into the GLIAC Championship,” Ryan added.
