MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan cross country team will host its lone home meet of the season, the U.P. Championship, on Friday (Oct. 12) at the NMU Golf Course. The women’s 4-kilometer race starts at 4 p.m. with the men’s 8k at 4:45 p.m. Admission is free.
Teams competing with NMU at this year’s meet are Gogebic, Finlandia, Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech.
“We’re really excited to get racing again after having a week off,” NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. “Everyone is healthy and got some really good workouts in.”
NMU is currently ranked eighth in the Midwest Region behind Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Wayne State, Southern Indiana, Saginaw Valley State, Hillsdale and Bellarmine.
“Our course is fairly similar to the Regional Championship course with the rolling grassy hills where we ultimately want to make it to the National Championship,” Ryan added.
The ‘Cats have placed in the top ten at the four meets they have participated in this season. This is includes a first place finish at the Michigan Tech Opener and the Midwest Collegiate Opener. NMU finished sixth in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite and ninth at the Roy Griak Invite, the nation’s largest Cross Country meet, facing 37 other schools.
Juniors Mandy Dye and Mallory Celaya have placed first for the ‘Cats in the four meets on the season. Dye finished first overall at Tech and fifth at the Midwest Opener. Celaya placed 19th in Eau Claire and 28th at the Roy Griak Invite.
It will be the fifth time this season NMU has faced MTU. The ‘Cats have defeated the Huskies in the previous meets. NMU finished above Finlandia at the opening meet of the season and has not competed against LSSU.
