MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team returns home for two Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchups this weekend. The Wildcats face Ohio Dominican University on Friday (Oct. 12) at 4 p.m. and Ashland University on Sunday (Oct. 14) at noon from the NMU Soccer Field.
NMU is 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC after two losses on the road last weekend to Northwood and Saginaw Valley State. Freshman Gabriella Garza scored the loan Wildcat goal, for her second of the season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard finished the weekend with seven saves, while sophomore Nichole Musi had two.
Ashland is 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the GLIAC and on a two-game winning streak. The Eagles defeated both Walsh and Malone last weekend. Allison Richards leads the Eagles with four goals on the season while Bethany Lang and Kathleen Demaree each have two.
The ‘Cats and Eagles meet for the 18th time since its first meeting in 1997. Ashland leads the all-time meetings, 11-4-3, and 5-2-1 in games played in Marquette. In the last meeting, a season ago, it was a defensive battle between both teams, as the game ended in a scoreless tie.
After also defeating Walsh and Malone, Ohio Dominican improves to 7-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in conference action. Lauren Pratt is the GLIAC Player of the Week after scoring three goals in the team’s last three games. She leads the Panthers with six tallies on the season. Jennifer Holton and Jordan Mazzi each have four goals.
ODU and NMU meet for just the third time, with the ‘Cats leading the all-time series 2-0, and 1-0 in Marquette. NMU shutout the Panthers 1-0 in Columbus, Ohio last year. Sophomore forward Tevun Sellers had the lone goal for the ‘Cats.
