Volleyball Travels to GLVC/GLIAC Crossover
MARQUETTE, Mich. – After sweeping Finlandia on Tuesday evening, the Northern Michigan University volleyball team will travel to Aurora, Illinois for the Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover. The tournament is in its fifth year and is the nation’s largest collegiate volleyball tournament.
The Wildcats enter the tournament with an overall record of 13-6 and a 5-4 mark in conference play. On Tuesday evening, NMU shutout non-conference opponent Finlandia, 3-0 from the Vandament Arena, after splitting two matches in Ohio last weekend.
NMU has participated in the crossover for the last four seasons, and has a record of 10-6. Last year the ‘Cats went 1-2 with a five-set win over Bellarmine and a pair of losses to Missouri-S&T (3-2) and Northern Kentucky (3-0).
Northern will face Southern Indiana in its first game on Friday (Oct. 12) at noon followed by Missouri St. Louis at 6:30 p.m. The ‘Cat end the tournament at 2 p.m. against Lewis on Saturday (Oct. 13) for their final non-conference match of the season.
“All three opponents are very competitive programs that play at a high level,” stated head coach Dominic Yoder. “We’re expecting three very tough matches.”
NMU defeated both Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis in five sets on Sept. 8 at the Missouri S&T Classic.
The two-day tournament will feature 48 matches with 16 teams from the GLVC and 16 from the GLIAC. The tournament is designed to increase competition between teams from the two leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region. One team from each conference will face off in each contest. The conference that has the best combined record at the end of the tournament will earn the crossover traveling trophy. The GLVC currently has possession of it, and has for the last two years.
The GLVC is a 16-member NCAA Division II conference with members in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin and was established in 1978. The GLIAC was founded in 1972, consists of 16 league members from Michigan and Ohio.
