MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened the 2012-13 season with an exhibition win on Sunday (Oct. 7) afternoon from the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats scored goals in the first and third periods and the two NMU goaltenders combined for a shutout, defeating Brock University 2-0.

“We go into a game like this trying to accomplish three things,” NMU coach Walt Kyle said. “We try to get through the game healthy and use it as a conditioner, we try to evaluate personnel and we try to grow within the system and I think we did all three things today.”

Sophomore defenseman Mitch Jones scored a power-play goal on a blast from the blueline at 8:11 in the first. Freshman forward Justin Rose won the faceoff back to Jones for the assist.

“We were able to get a lot of young guys a lot of minutes and ice time and we just rolled lines and didn’t pay much attention to who was where,” Kyle added. “They got a good taste of the game at this level.”

Freshman forward Cohen Adair added his first goal in the Green and Gold with a shot between the circles at 14:04 of the third. Junior forward Erik Higby generated a Brock turnover along the boards and found Adair open in front of the net for the assist.

“The Higby, Rose and Adair line was clearly our best line tonight and they generated a lot of chances,” said Kyle.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau made the start between the pipes for the ‘Cats. He made nine saves in the first period and first half of the second. Freshman Michael Doan replaced him with 9:08 left in the second, stopping 11 shots.

NMU outshot the Badgers 37-20. Brock had nine penalties on the day for 18 minutes. The ‘Cats were 1-for-8 on the man advantage. NMU took six penalties for 12 minutes. The Badgers were 0-for-5 on the power play.

Northern opens regular season play next weekend at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. against the Wisconsin Badgers in a non-conference home series for the ‘Cats. Game times are set for 8:05 p.m. Eastern on both nights. Tickets are still available at the Superior Dome Ticket office or online at
